The location of the Tokaj Wine Region
The Tokaj Wine Region is regarded as an outstanding place. Its world renown is primarily thanks to Tokaji Aszú. It is located in north-east Hungary, along the foothills of the Zemplén Hills, by the confluence of the rivers Bodrog and Tisza.
Emperor Charles VI (Charles II of Hungary) issued a decree in 1737 that demarcated the Tokaj Wine Region, the first appellation control in the world, in order to protect the special values of the terroir.
In 2002 UNESCO inscribed the Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape onto the list of World Heritage with the aim of protecting its historic architectural and natural environment. The World Heritage area extends over the 27 settlements in the wine region.
